Yamaha TDM 850 4TX oil usage

Hi Everyone,
I'm new here. I've had a TDM 850 4TX from 2000 for 7 months and love it. I've been doing a lot of riding recently as I have a close relative in hospital 150 miles away. Is it normal to use 750ml of oil in 500 miles if you are riding hard?

Hi, carpe-tdm is a great place for all things TDM, sure the 850 does use oil, but not sure it should use that much.

No ... back in the day, between services I'd be lucky to use that in a few '000s miles. I'd go on hols and not take any with me, nor bother checking .. never needed to.

Can't help as to why's or wherefores though.

Hope Carpe - TDM is still going, I haven't looked for years.

Not wanting to say the wrong thing, but you are checking the level in the described manor from the owners manual aren't you?? Sorry, but back in the day I've seen more than one TDM/TRX meet its demise due to that.

Assuming that that is t the issue........

Back in the '90 s Yamaha used to say that anything over 1 litre in a 1000 miles is excessive.
So I guess maybe you need to do some investigation. Or keep a very close eye on it and buy lots of oil.

Carpetdm forum still going strong.

Not had mine for a few years now, but 100ml per 1000 miles was my usual allowance when ridden hard. Yours does seem excessive compared to what most of the lads on carpe report.

Funny engines, some use oil, some don't. Luck of the draw..... but make sure you check level by the book or you'll never get it right.

The TDM is a very close relative of the XTZ 750, a popular upgrade is to put the bigger TDM engine in the XTZ. It's a very common issue with the XTZ to use lots of oil, mine certainly does but the oil usage is predictable and not erratic so you can easily anticipate when you need to top up,(usually after higher revving motorway miles)
