XT1200 Hard start

Post by yoda »

Well, had my xt1200 for four years now, its been great never missed a beat etc in all that time, until tues night. I think i'd just left it to long, after getting back from my Mull of Kintyre ride weekend, it was unload and shove back into garage, back to work busy and been using my 660z since then. Thought better just give it a run up and clean, went to it, pressed button and it span over ok (most xt1200's seem to sound a bit slow on turn over) but didn't fire..smell of petrol in exhaust..on no the dreaded hard start. Pulled the efi fuse and span over WOT, coughed but still no go, ah well put it on charge and left it. next night span over fine, coughed still no go, hmm. checked battery, seemed ok, all connections, fuses etc yup, fine. left it on charge and looked for a new battery, ytz12s yuasa, noted the ytz14s same size and better cranking power, halfords prices online were pretty good (theres a first eh) and they had one localy. So collected new battery, replaced, cranked over WOT with fuse out, fired up and stopped, re fit fuse, crank over WOT and fired straight up. Did 3x starts, all ok. left it till cold and re started first prod of button. maybe the original battery had enough juice to crank but not enough for a good spark, seems ok now. Funny tho my last bike a gs12 the battery went at 4 yrs, replaced that with a hawker odysey and much better cranking with that in. (thumbs)
Chaos is the only camouflage that incompetence needs to operate at full capacity.

I dunno where that road goes, might as well go take a look anyway there's no where else i need to be right now.

Wide open throttle.....keep the battery charged and in good con, plugs changed as per manual and don't turn bike on and off repeatedly without starting and you shouldn't get this problem.
It's well documented on the super Tenere site.

It's a known thing... it seems the ecu gets confused if started then stopped. WOT should cure it.
At least it gives us S10 owners something to complain about as so little elso goes wrong.

Doesn`t help that the S10 seems to spin over so slowly  GS 800 I had used to spin up like a MF in fact it always worried me that it would (to me) rev it`s nuts off on start up
Higher rated battery is a good idea (thumbs)

Had this hard start problem twice on my S10, have come to believe its due to electrical noise generated by the starter motor interfering with the ECU.
Yamaha UK do not recognise this as a problem but the guys in the USA are talking about a re call.
I have a file on the subject, maybe if we pooled all our info we may get a better understanding of the issue.

if I so much as breath on the throttle prior to starting , then no chance, just press the button then leave it to idle into smooth running, very occasionally it will fart like they do and stop... then your bolloxed for at least 5 mins.

I understand that the problem is caused by the fuel injection squirting a shot of fuel into the cylinders every time you turn the ignition on, in readiness for starting. So if for any reason you turn the ignition on and off repeatedly without starting and letting the engine run for a while, then the plugs get wet and it doesn't fire.

When I had the problem on my S10, I pulled the Fuel Pump fuse and with throttle wide open, the engine started and ran until excess fuel had cleared from the system.

Personally can't see how that can happen all that happens when you turn the ignition is the fuel pump primes itself

Quite common if you try to fire one up with a discharged battery, floods the motor.
Plugs will need cleaning or swapping. ;)
The solution,,
Charge battery fully before attempting to start (thumbs)
