Insurance: DO you add in 'Commuting' to your cover?

Post by Philiptigerrice »

Looking at a few bikes for my novice rider wife....

Got one quote for £107 a year, fully comp, with pillion, etc... really good value. Social Domestic and Pleasure.

Add in 'Commuting' and it doubles to £210 a year.

Its still not mental money of course, but she's a Midwife, who does maybe 3 or 4 shifts a month - she just works on the bank and does a bit for pocket money now and then.

If its raining - she uses the car! Lol

The Commuting bit, to me, suggests someone who's doing the daily slog to work, day in day out between 08:00 - 09:00 in rush hour mental traffic. She goes out at 20:00 and comes home at 07:00 :)

She'll probably 'commute' once, twice a month - the rest will be going for coffee and lunches

What to do?

Unless she rides to work in her uniform I wouldn't tell them.

Sadly if its a serious accident the insurance will find out and it could cost you £££££££. Much as I hate paying over the odds I would put it down on the application and get ripped off just in case.

My wife had exactly the same problem. (Experienced rider with full NCB)
78 quid up to £200+ for a part time job on a bloody 115cc scoot !!
Bennetts turned out to be better, £78 up to £90ish for a part time job.

Aye- just discussing it - and oddly, I think what is tipping the balance towards honesty, isn't the accident potential - its the fact that she works in Central Manchester!

If it gets nicked from outside the hospital at 04:00, and she doesn't notice till 08:00 or something - then questions, would, rightly be asked. I had my Honda Blackbird, liberated from Salford Royal a few years ago... So it happens.

I think she might ring them, and see if they can add commuting, but lower the premium, given that she's not, generally, riding in rush hour, and only going to work once in a blue moon (its a hard life!)

and if she has an accident and is not covered ? and god forbid it's a serious one where she will need a decent amount of money to help rehab ? what will you think then ? be honest and pay for proper cover or why bother at all ?

just my thoughts

cheers Spud ;)

She could argue that she just happened to be there with a friend who had been rushed in overnight, and she had followed the ambulance there on her bike, and while she was there the bike got nicked.
But tbh I think declaring the commuting would be the best policy.

I see it that if you don't buy the commuting bit then she will be uninsured on any work day that she uses the scooter.
Why bother with insurance for the othe days??

For me it's the same thing.

But most importantly, if someone else is seriously injured and she is uninsured......

Also an extra £103 per year, 3 shifts per month, £2.86 for each time she goes to work on it.......how much is a coffe in Starbucks???
