Post by legoman »

I ride a bmw f650gs twin 09. I'm trawling the interweb for some head bearing and front wheel bearing plus front brake pads all from one shop .I was looking at wemoto.. I was hoping that you all could help me find this interweb wonderland shop (thumbs) . and which head bearings do you recommend ie the best in you honest opinion... I have no mechanical ability at ALL .. so do you recommend doing it my self with the help of youtube videos etc or paying through the nose n going to a garage ..ouch.. or go it alone but slowly and carefully plus I don't have a shed load of tools so recommendations would help .as some of you have done this before on your own. was it easy hard what ????I need some help n advice b4 I say fookit n go to a garage n cry over the price HELP HELP

My advice is don't buy bearings from a bike shop. You'll pay double the price for half the quality bearing. Go to a bearing supply. Quality bearing is skf or fag

If you have no mechanical ability at all, changin head bearings is something better left to you friendly local bike mechanic.
Ask around on UKGSer or such who can recommend a good local to you mechanic.
It'll end in tears I tells ya.

One of the ways to learn is to do it yourself. If you have a garage at home and are in no rush then you should be fine as if you get stuck you can research it, order a tool etc and not have to worry about the bike being in the road or needed for work etc. I did the head bearings on my F800GS and pads too. The front wheel bearings shouldn't be hard. There are detailed guides on how to do it. I bought all my bearings from bearingking or bearingman from eBay. All SKF ones. Brake pads, much of a muchness but I got non sintered ones in the end from eBay too. M&P I think they came from. The head bearings are a bit of a pain but take your time and you'll be fine. Nice guide here. http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/f ... to.716362/ and video here: Buy them from here? You need 2 - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/320-28X-Q-SKF ... 20dae1852e Before you start though try and get all the tools you'll need like torque wrench etc. It's rewarding when you've done it. Wheel bearings - http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/f ... em.994537/ Buy wheel bearings here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6204-2RSH-SKF ... 1e82be9398 Brake pads - Easy peasy :) These ones should fit your bike too but double check. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EBC-Organic-M ... 5d40587edb

Well, well, well

Head bearings on F650/F800 GS Twins have a habit of going on a regular basis, well documented and a known issue

I would let a BMW Main DEALER do it, for you

Shock horror, you say :silly:

Not so quick, it is very wise to pay a BMW Main dealer to do it

Because all BMW parts and work, comes with a 2 year no quibble warranty

So when they fail again (at 18 months) as they surely will - you get the next job done FOC

Not so stupid, is it

I have friends with F800GS's and they've paid once (out of initial 2 year warranty) and never paid again, as it keeps being done on the parts warranty (thumbs)

Smart move, weak point on F600/650 GS Twins

THANK YOU ONE AND ALL ;) will decide over the next few days what to do. will have a run around a few garages as I live near chesterfield so there are a few bike shops to choose from.. I do have a spare bike so the bmw can sit and put her feet up for a while [spare bike is a Honda cb 600f hornet 08 in white}. will price tools and bearings pads n stuff up before making my mind up compared to garage..
