BMW ESA Suspension

Post by RavenstoneGSA »

Hi All,

Hoping for a bit of sympathy with this one!!!

On my last service the dealer gave an advisory to "keep an eye" on my rear ESA suspension unit. He quoted an eye watering £1350.00 supply only for a replacement!!! I've seen used units ranging from £250 - £450 which is almost certainly the route I'll be taking but has anyone out there had any experience replacing an ESA unit?

Any advice / manly hugs greatly accepted.

Cheers,

John.

No experience apart from hearing about the cost when things do go wrong. It's the very reason I spent time looking for a GSA with standard shocks. Spent the money on a set of new Nitrons to suit me.

One option I have heard of is some of the aftermarket suspension companies do make ESA shocks. From what I understand is they transfer over the ESA controller onto the new aftermarket unit.

Have a search for Nitron, Wilbers, Ohlins £££, etc etc. If you are on ukgser grab a few beers a have a good read up.

Good luck, I'm not sure if the OE ESA units are able to be serviced as that could also be a option if you can put up with a week without the bike.

It's not the end of the world if it's leaking, there are a few companies rebuilding them,
If you are feeling wealthy it would be worth replacing them with a set of wilburs, much better (thumbs)

It looks to me like weeping seals so I think that a rebuild is the best option. I'm going to investigate Ohlins / Wilbers etc. but the rebuild sounds good.
