Hi guys..
Right folks..ive a plastic enduro tank on ccm so vapour leaks out as on most platic tanks..need to bond a strap retaining metal clip onto outside of tank to tie down my tank bag ..tried a cargo net but nothing to secure it to..
So super strong glue that bonds to metal, plastic and wont break contact with fuel fumes..dosent mind dirt, water etc..
Yeh tall call but something must be around..jb weld maybe?
petrol resistant adhesive..?
Re: petrol resistant adhesive..?
hello, ive always used 24hr araldite epoxy, good clean surfaces and let the glue dry in normal room temp,

Re: petrol resistant adhesive..?
ive had decent results with Araldite too.....mostly around oil though...not sure about petrol, I think JB weld is similar stuff.
bound to be something more specialised in the auto industry i'd have thought though
google brought this up, theres probably more

Re: petrol resistant adhesive..?
imho its less likely to be petrol vapours
the problem is the tank is HDPE so resists adhesives
also vibration/flexing of the tank
i'd forget glue/epoxy/adhesive as the contact area is also small on a metal clip.
i would attach (stitch/loop/eyelet?) the clip to an adhustable webbing strap that is then wrapped around the tank or frame/headstock. Then clip the bag to that.

Can you not come off the seat retaining boss at the back of the tank with a strap or thin plate? Run something up from under the front of the seat. Not quite sure where you want it.

Don't think any "glue" will work as others have said. Got to be a 'mechanical' fixing of some sort.

bugger
just got/ordered some glue off Amazon..never mind itll come in handy for something..the atv tank panniers i use straddle the tank like wolfman one but mine where a gift (thumbs) ..so going to have to rig up somehing ..last time i melted the straps on the exhaust and disconnected the rectifier :woohoo: ..

Re: petrol resistant adhesive..?
the problem isnt the petrol Russ, its the polyethylene the tank is made of. its the same stuff as cling film, so imagine not much sticks to that does it? no solvent based adhesive will bond it. some contact adhesives like superglue will "stick" but you could flick it off easily, even if you roughen the surface. dont trust it.
your choices are echanical fasteners or plastic welding. flameless (hot air) plastic welding works well but its not easy and you have to use EXACTLY the same plastic as a 'welding' rod, unless theres a bit you can chop off the tank then where are you going to get it?
i would make some mechanical form of fastener. is there anything you can crimp those luggage hook things to?
