DRZ400 Cam Chain Tensioner

Post by KTMChris »

As some of you know I recently got myself a 2000 model DRZ400s.
What are your views on the manual/ automatic tensioners. I know they updated them in 2003/04.
Do I leave it alone, fit an upgraded one or go to a manual tensioner?

Cheers

Hi Chris,
I`m leaving mine as the camchain is quiet and it`s pretty low mileage. If your cam chain is quiet I would leave it for the time being and look at changing it for a manual one later. Your right about the upgrade circa 2003 :)
cheers,

For the sake of twenty quid and a couple of minutes spannering, go for a manual one.
Peace of mind and all that!

They can be silent and still fail if you bounce your bike off the limiter it can cause camchain to jump a tooth and detonate your engine

Definitely go for a MCCT. Not worth the risk and pretty easy to adjust:

If you have the later one leave it be

If you have the earlier one change it

+1

If it's an older silver automatic one, change it to the newer brown (2003-on) automatic one.

If you have or fit a manual one, make sure you know how/when to adjust it correctly.

I'm not aware of any newer brown automatic failures.
