A wee bit further north . . .

Post by Steve T »

Not been to the north coast for some time, so today was the day to remedy that.
Quickish road to Inverness, north on the A9 then onto the turn off for Bonar Bridge and some twisties.
1st pictures are views from the Struie of the Dornoch Firth

Past Bonar Bridge and then the back road to the Falls of Shin visitors centre/café. The “thing” sculpture cum walkway cover is, apparently, a salmons tail!

Headed for Altnaharra and happened upon some open gates . . .

Took a left at Altnaharra and took the very small road that runs along the base of the hill Ben Hope

And who lives in a house like this . . .

Looking back at Ben Hope & it’s similarly named Loch

Next bit of tarmac that didn’t have huge clumps of grass growing out of the middle of the road was part of the NC500 route. This is the sea Loch Eribol

Nearer Durness can be found stunning beaches like this . . .

The only problem with taking a dip in the brimmy up here is that you very quickly turn the same colour as the water

And then there is this one, Arkle, a favourite of mine

All told I covered 308 miles . . . and there is still some fuel available for use in the little bikes tank. Now that is impressive . . . even if my average speed wasn’t. But you don’t see much when you wiz past things

Stunning pictures. I must do a tour of Scotland sometime. Only ever been to Edinburgh a couple of times, for meetings. What a country.

That's about as far north west as you can go isn't it? Next stop the Faroes and then Iceland?

Correct on both counts.

You can get a foot passenger only ferry over to Cape Wrath and then a minibus out to the lighthouse . . . well you could before C19 bollicks kicked in  , that gets you a little further north-west.

We've spent quite a bit of time on the West coast including the Outer Hebrides but never been North of Ullapool, is there plenty to see?
From the many photo's I've seen it looks to be more open with bigger skies.

Spookily similar garb and machine  :D . When were we there? :D

Crofty - did approx. 40 miles of the actual route. Far more interesting and less trafficed roads to ride than the NC ;)

Tonibe63 - Plenty to see . . . if you like big skies and very varied topography. Not many roads to choose from, but there isn't a bad ride up that end, IMHO, even some sections of the NC route

Wonderful ride report and photos Steve...!

It's been a few long years since I was up riding those roads myself, it's simply idyllic alright. From Altnaharra to Tongue is another great ride etc.......and Durness etc...

Wonderful locations for 2-wheel machinery of any sort. Keep the wheels turning.....!

Cheers;
