Longest Day Ride

Post by Steve T » Sun Jun 21, 2020 7:02 pm

Had planned a run north to wild camp over the night of no darkness . . . but forecast heavy thunderstorms saw common sense prevail . . . so I just went out and rode some more local to me roads . . .

Managed to avoid all the downpours - more by luck than judgement - but some of the miles I covered were over rain soaked roads. roads wet & me dry = happyness

Reminds me of my first bike trip to Scotland, when 40 years ago today, well last night to be exact, I camped on the headland just east of John O Groats with a bottle of something, and watched as sunset merged into sunrise. Unforgettable, as was the puncture the following day, then the 12 hour ride back south in torrential rain the day after.

Superb,

What is the situation in Scotland ref riding on unpaved roads?, am I correct in thinking that "Green laining" is not a thing up there or maybe I just imagined I heard that?.

I am trying to get a route planned for when Scotland opens up again, I will be on a GS and would like to find some off road sections like fire roads etc that I can use to find wild camping stops easy, do you have a resource or start point that I could look into?.

Regards

What a beautiful country. Scotland is still on my list of 'must visit properly on a bike' before I'm too old...

Thanks for the kind words chaps :D

Bob - the time of year kind of determines how far I wander "off-piste" up here, not wanting to provide target practice for errant game keepers  ;) . Plus most are so short you'd never get up enough speed to "Braaaaap" me  , But it would be my pleasure to provide you with a guided tour of various dirty alternative rides ;) . Jims got a few he likes as well :D

HoboBeemer - there is no legal access to off road riding up here without the landowners permission and thus there is no "starting point" for you to use as a reference for dirt riding. I use an open gate policy, taking the chance of an entertaining, one way discussion with an irrate land owner/estate worker.
I know of only a couple of public roads this far north that are so broken you are really off road riding  , but I'd prefer not to disclose their whereabouts as even local use is leading to the threat of de-listing them from the public road register, leading them to become private land and thus out-of-bounds.

Peter - One of the local dealers got them for me after I'd provided the dimensions. They are rubber, thus not prone to cracking as quickly as plastic ones.
