Advice needed
After years of road bikes, i want to get back into green lane riding. Use to do it on XT600, xr500 and a few others. Now ive gone from 125bhp to 24.5 Himalayan. Problem is some of the lanes that i used to go on are for walkers and pedal bikes only now. Can someone give me some pointers of where i could go?. I live near the Southdown in Chichester. Be nice to find so tracks around west Sussex and surrey.

Join the TRF (www.trf.org.uk), and/or buy OS maps..
Byways open to all Traffic (BOAT) on OS Maps are legal unless signed (TRO'd) otherwise. You can check on the County Council Rights of Way Dept's Definitive Map.
Most Other Routes with Public Access (OPRA) on OS Maps are actually Unclassified County Roads and legal unless signed otherwise. You can check on the County Council Highways Dept's List of Streets.
Hope this helps

Re: Advice needed
Cheers Richard. Found a few today but either they were blocked by tree trunks or the gates were padlocked. Meet up with 2 fellow off-roaders this afternoon and they both told me i should have access to these tracks but the snob locals take the law into their own hands. Checked the West Sussex site and they do state they are BOATS. The 2 chaps said it's not worth contacting the Council as they can't be bothered about any problems regarding Byways.

Re: Advice needed
It's quite legal for you to remove padlocks from a genuine right of way.
Keeping them is theft, but it's not theft if you hand them in at a police station as evidence of the criminal activity of obstruction.
Likewise if there are enough of you, you can roll tree-trunks to the side...but be warned...things can escalate

Greetings Ian,
I support Richard in advising that you join the TRF, I would add considering that you contact GLASS. The local Groups can report the blockages and if no action is taken they could threaten the Highway Authority with legal action.
https://www.glass-uk.org/other-info/contact-us.html
https://trail.trf.org.uk/local-groups-m ... 22&reset=1
If you were to join GLASS then you would have access to their excellent mapping system called Trailwise2. The system is kept up to date by Members recording their use and highlighting any problems such as you describe.

Hugh.

By no means comprehensive and of course have a glance in case of any signage that will be more up to date than the map
