Unfortunately (or fortunately for us) we never got to meet Trip, but we did exchange a few messages and he was on standby to help should we have needed it. A lovely gesture.
So ZimTim probably has the right idea. The bodge is to take the flipflop, it was the cheapest, nastiest rubber type one we could get, and cut it up and wedge it between the spring on the shock, thus adding more resistance/stopping it going down so far. Whether or not it worked is debateable, but it got us a few hundred miles from our Airbnb, to Washington and then onto a hotel that evening near Richmond.
BMW would have been proud of that engineering.
We rode up into Washington and along that long strip of green meadows that you see in the movies that go up to Capitol Hill. Traffic was remarkably light and I found some bike parking. Unfortunately, there was no way of leaving out kit on the bike and so we had to walk around with our bike gear and helmets which was uncomfortable.
