Great weather this morning on a public holiday so I decided a wee day ride out was in order to include a stop off for lunch and return in time for dinner.
The last time I'd ridden this route I couldn't get to the car park at the top due to snow drifts on the road. This is an ideal ride out if you're based some where and want to explore. It's not often ridden due to the fact that it's a dead end and you have to come back on yourself. If the main route is along a valley and then to climb, one usually finds that there's a parallel route on the opposite side to break the same route upon your return.
Head south to Col du Soulor.....
The route de Col d'Aubisque is on the LHS of frame
Nice old crashed car.......
Hang left here to Arglès-Gazost.
Ride on the Gedre and Héas and you'll see the Cirque de Troumouse ahead after some great twisties.
There's a cafe, with splendid views at
N 42 44 182
E 000 05 195
Ride on past and keep climbing...you can see the cafe and car park in the image
Arrive at car park at
N 42 43 680
E 000 05 730
You can dander over a shirt distance onto the grass to lie down beside a bubbling brook and have a picnic.
Back down the mountain and turn left to climb to the car park to the dam called Gloriettes
Car park at
N 42 45 099
E 000 03 098
A 30m dander gets you to the dam.
Come back down .......
......then turn left to ride on down the valley.
I headed home as far as I could via Chèze, i.e. along the other side of the valley from whence I'd ridden up culminating in picking up a short stone lane section of the TET outside Lourdes before returning home after stopping off visiting friends.
Approx 200kms total ride out.
Then I drunk beer.
