EDC 2018 Maroc Africa, Ride Report.

Post by WIBO »

So....it's was that time again......a gathering of a certain group of the usual misfits and weirdos for a ride out to Maroc...along with some new ones. It was to start on a Friday before the weekend.

The first two would arrive at my house with a van and and their motos from Scotland and another would arrive on his moto from Jersey.....I know.....he can't help it.

The next, a French rider, was asked to arrive the next morning at 0900hrs from my next village.

In true Scot fashion they arrived with beer and we had to dander up to the pizza shop after they arrived to stuff our boliers. A couple of pints whilst waiting for the order then some wine didn't really assist to any great degree once we thought about it the next day.

Upon our arrival back at my house, the Scot from Jersey.....he'd arrived too..... 40 bottles of beer later and off to bed at 0330hrs....that's handy we all thought.

Bertin, the French rider arrived promptly the next morning to get us up citing surprisal that we'd been on a late bender before we were to ride all day to Valladolid in Spain......I know...we just couldn't help it.

We leave over Col du Poutalet bound for our hostel that I've booked.....we'll be later due to leaving not at 0900hrs but at 1100hrs......baaaa.

Of course after 30mins the first goat incident occurs resulting in riders breaking off to return to my house to bring their money and passport that they'd forgotten......baaaaaaa.

We have a great ride in good weather over the Pyrénées stopping for a fatboy special at Mc Donalds in Huesca..............all at about 90kph......you don't have to lower your gearing to go to Maroc..........keep it as high so as you can ride plus 115kph all day....on an autoroute all through Spain

oh....and read Page One on the Invite for Tips and Tricks.....oh....and read Page One on the Invite for Tips and Tricks.......oh....and read Page One on the Invite for Tips and Tricks........oh....and read Page One on the Invite for Tips and Tricks............oh....and read Page One on the Invite for Tips and Tricks.......

We arrive late and check in......... a great wee road side hostel for €27 B&B .....a few euros plus for a sandwich and a cold beer.

Hostal Restaurante María Victoria

N 41 47 149

The others go to bed and I later greet the others upon their arrival......they were cold and tired after their delay. Up to bed and we'll hook up in the morning over breakfast.

Someone did ask me the next morning if a sachet they were holding was sugar or salt......blank stare ensued as described in Page One of the Invite under Tips and Tricks.......

Note to self....don't go an a 0330hrs bender then ride 680kms.....baaaaaaa

our journey started with the same precsision….ferry was delayed for four hours at Portsmouth so we disembarked in Santander at 21.30 instead of 17.30 then the group of six riders got split into 2x3 before we left the port  then followed a 170 mile ride in the dark, sleet, rain and homicidal wind gusting across bridges.Arriving at the first hostel at 01.15am allowed us 7 hours before the 14 hour day getting to the southern Spanish port, its a good start to the "holiday"

Next after we squared up the bill we fuelled up in good weather in the fuel station adjacent to the Hostel. We'd be riding to Alumunecar 20mins or so west of Motril to a three star hotel there with a restaurant just opposite. We wanted to keep out of any main port in case anything goofy happened with our motos.

730kms....long day just to get to where we needed to be....taking an extra day there and back in Spain means we'd miss two days in Africa.

Hotel Toboso........Good value and clean and correct for €23 B&B buffet ......plus a €13 opposite for a meal and a couple of beers. Parking underground on site for €6 each.

At

An easy morning to eat like a horse ( a few look like horses so they might as well eat like one ) and ride along the coast to the port for the 1200hrs sailing to Africa.

Take the 20 minute ride along coastal twisties to arrive at the Motril - Nador Ticket Office here..... €66 one way.

N 36 43 476
W 003 31 879

Buy a one way ticket after showing your passport and moto registration papers. You'll get a passport form with your ticket that you can fill out on the 5hr boat journey.

From here ride on through the port entry gate to the Nador Ferry Queue sign posted with not too big signs. Come the time a police car will escort you to where you need to be en mass.

Parking for ferry is here.....

N 36 43 428
W 003 31 868

We hang around in the sun waiting.......

A repair is made to the neck of a crf fuel tank with JB Weld......that's the start of it.......baaaaaaaaaaa

The port police car comes and we follow it to the ferry which is on time. Bring a pen, shorts/jeans, passport and a pair of trainers up from the hold ( if you want ) so as you can get out of bike kit and dander about........or laze about.

Country entry forms will be filled out on the ferry and produced to the police on board who'll note you within their system......you'll get a CIN number stamped on your passport too.

Once off the ferry ride to the exit and and hand your moto customs papers, that you've printed off well in advance to Customs.........he'll scan it and send you on your way once signed off by the head officer dandering about, usually after about ten minutes..........if you want to wait an hour or more don't print them off and then dander all over the port to fill them out by hand......remember, this will add to your enjoyment if it is pouring with rain and blowing a gale.

Once we leave the port exit gates there's a small car park immediately to your RHS after a few metres ride....park here and at the end of same there are two ATM's......a short ride out of the port district in the direction of Nador proper, there's a fuel station on your LHS if fuel is needed.

We ride to an apt hotel 11kms out........clean and correct that will supply dinner from a listed menu. Bikes can be parked on their terrace outside the entrance doors in full view of reception.

Hotel Doha 220MAD B&B with dinner for 130MAD

N 35 11 558
W 002 55 872

We all eat on the terrace that evening........someone asks me where the toilets are only to be met with a blank stare......I'm considering replying at this point with random vegetable names usually reserved for locals. :D

We all retire and climb up three flights of stairs to our large, clean and modern apartments......at this point one should remember to make a special effort to not pack an overnight bag and make two trips up and down to bring all kit up.

I had to tell a few riders this was not Saddam or Gaddafi and all would be well......I told them the other two were in fact, dead.

Our journey for real starts the next morning in daylight.
