In the saddle the bike is great off road. Riding on the road during run in is a bit of pain as you can’t rev over 6k and that’s where the bike comes alive but getting up these hills on rocky tracks it’s awesome. The cobbles stopped and it became a lovely bumpy trail the came out on a moor. There were a few routes to choose from and the GPX seemed to lead me into a bog so I took a slightly higher road on Cwncarn Forest Drive and crested the top of the hill on a very soft trail, it was lovely to make a bit of progress so I didn’t stop for a photo of the super view. Back down and another thankfully easier gate and I transferred across to continue on CFD but the next gate was locked and blocked with boulders so I popped on the road and headed down into Risca. En route I found out why bikes have ABS fitted now thanks to someone hammering up the hill in a Skoda as I was coming down, it probably saved me either hitting the car or sliding underneath it. Down to Tesco for tea and chocolate and a long chat with the Gavin the trolley man about Hondas and local routes. Out and up into Machen Mountain which is a lovely old broken road with a cracking view slightly ruined by tonnes of fly tipped waste and the leftovers from kids partying.

Down the other side and across this lovely stream into Cwmfelinfache and onto a long road section to Caerphilly and then up onto this lovely moorland.

And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.

At this point it started getting wet. There was a weird black mountain that just looked like a pile of coal and then bigger and bigger puddles with secondary tracks that were also bogged down.

This area gets a lot of muddy traffic. Onwards and more and more of the track was under water but the view was lovely (apart from all the fly tipping).

Finally I ran out of talent and got spat off the bike in the soft ground. Nothing broken but I’m pretty sore today. Back on it and it started to get easier around Senghenydd and the trail riding finished well with this ‘round the hill’ trail before going to Pontypridd.

Filthy and happy the Honda and I headed home.
Distance 56km time 3hrs 55mins

What I learnt this time:
Good handguards are money well spent.
Gates are bad.
The sidestand on the Rally is too tall, you have to really think about where to stop.
A Garmin Montana is well worth the money.
And now, Harry, let us step out into the night and pursue that flighty temptress, adventure.

Brilliant and colourful report. Brenhden.
What Montana version is it?

(The last bit is my local trail) :)

I am a bit surprised that TET is difficult and dangerous in parts.

My Montana is a 610 I think.

It would have been a lot easier if I was with someone else and if it hadn't been autumn.

Nice to have something like that on your doorstep, I looks like a really popular off road area. :D

Cheers Will. Yeah it's a bit of a risk but adventure always is
