I rode another black top, dead end day trip....erm......where you have to do a U-turn and ride back from whence you came.

This ride is ideal if you're resting up anywhere in the region and just want to go for an easy ride out....dine and go back to your accommodation. For me it was 240kms with plenty of stops for pics and to stretch ones legs.

You can pick up the ride at Laruns, France and head to the Spansh border, a standard crossing point at Col du Pourtalet. ( It's a 'trading post' historically and you can pick up tobacco and alcohol at very reasonable prices... e.g. a bottle of Drambuie for €18 at time of typing )

You ride on over and drop down through the ski station of El Formigal and on to Escarlilla.... ( camp site in village centre by the by ).

Climb out of Laruns along a short section of gorge, direction Col du Pourtalet.

For the first 15 minutes of twisties the road surfacer has been renewed with fresh blacktop where I stop to enjoy the view of Artouste ski station.

The snow melt has filled up to the level of the dam.

Top right hand side you can see that there's a restaurant

In summer you can go up in the cable car, take a day sack picnic and eat at a lake, before riding back to your accommodation. A small narrow gauge train takes you there.

If you want to ride on...head south along the twisties (thumbs)

The last of the snow-melt run off is apparent ......

Nip up over Col du Pourtalet and cross into Spain.

Continue to ride down passing though Escarrilla.

Just after Escarrilla you'll hang left to ride the twisties for the ski station of Panticosa. A short distance in you'll see a roundabout....ride straight on.

You'll see a lake to your RHS with great mountain views.

Image

Snow-melt is filling this lake up too.

Image

Great twisties to get to the Spa.

You'll arrive at a lake......

.....and a restaurant

When you head back down again you have the choice of joining the main route again...or riding around the lake to join it further south by heading to El Pueyo de Jaca and riding over the dam.......often overlooked......its a 20 minute detour and well worth it.

You'll scout the lake at water level before climbing to a little known caged view point.

Great views of the lake

Looking down.....

There's a small parking here and if you want you can try the zip line too.

A couple of hundred meters after is the small village where you can get tapis etc.

A twisty ride down will get you to the dam

After a short tunnel at the end of the dam you'll hit the main road again.

Yip...the short dead ends are usually quite empty and ideal for a break. That lake ride is only a 15-20 minute detour making an ideal photoshoot and bar snack, before joining the main road again, to carry on down the mountain.
