WK 400 Trail bikes head south for some RB5 fun

Post by Glenn_G » Sat Oct 01, 2016 6:34 pm

I'd been looking to do the Vibraction RB5 road book for some time and convinced my mate Roy to do it this year as well. We even got two week pass outs - result :) We'd also both looked into getting WK 400 Trail bikes and after checking them out and test rides we both thought they were worth a punt. Roy bought his new four weeks before the trip, prepped it and test rode it on a days trail ride before this big trip. I bought secondhand two weeks before the trip, and time slipped by changing tyres, rear wheel bearings, adding stronger hand guards, 12v power sockets, garmin mount, finding tools, cleaning alot of the bodywork bolt and nut threads with tap n die whereas Roy replaced all his with stainless steel. I took it on a 14 mile test ride including Sandy Lane (near Woburn) and as the wheels went round, suspension went up and down and nothing fell off thought it was ready :) Although my test ride did show the front end felt/sounded harsh and back home found the head bearings had play and were knocking/loose. As we were due to be leaving end of the week, I ordered some spare head bearings and took them with me just in case. Loading/prepping new bikes always takes longer as you're trying to work out where the bungees will go and if they will stretch enough :)
We got the bikes all packed up and agreed to meet at our southern MK RV point on the A421 Buckingham round about.

Friday 9th september 2016
So Friday comes round and I fill up at Morrisons Westcroft and then head towards A421 Buckingham round about. About 100 yards before the round about I see a cop car past by me in the opposite direction, now why do I(we?) get that guilty feeling even if done nothing wrong ... anyway that helped me this time as it suddenly dawned on me my new bike is not taxed yet  So get to RV point and dig out the logbook for the Ref Number and go online to sort it out - technology saves the day :)

We then trundle off down the A34 to Portsmouth, filling up at a fuel station near to the ferry so we can make good time tomorrow once in France.
Fuel station stop also gives me time to check and adjust my chain (it's the original chinese fitment). I also think the head bearings are possibly a little loose again - that will have to wait till tomorrow. We ride the bikes onto the Etretat ferry and dump our kit in our cabin, it's now I realise my body armour has not been washed in a while as it is humming, so it gets to hang in the toilet - hoping the extraction van will air it :)

Thankfully it was a smooth crossing and after a full english breakfast we gather the kit and get off the ferry onto a nice sunny Le Harve. Load up the route for Collioure on the Garmins and get ready for a long day in the saddle, here's Roy ready for the off:

400 miles later we crest a hill and miss our slip road turn off, but quickly pull up on the hard shoulder indicators flashing, we kill the engines and push the bikes back - it starts drizzling then - great, we then roll into the Autogrill - Cote, Loranges for the night. Rather than leave the bikes out of our sight in the car park vulnerable to passing traffic, we ride them up the front of the hotel and hide them behind a food kiosk which we can see from our room
