Crinan on Scottish West Coast

Post by IainD »

What a fantastic day today, Sun shining, just enough breeze to keep the Midgies down and not too cold.

I decided that a trip to Crinan was on the cards after advising others to go, not been back since May. It really is a beautiful spot, not far from the main routes.

Set off from Kilbirnie (Ayrshire) around 12pm over to Largs, which was packed, then up to Gourock and ferry to Hunters Quay (Dunoon); the Clyde was almost flat calm.

Up to Carndow and round to Inverary for a coffee and Scone (cream and jam) then one of my favorite pieces of tarmac, some gorgeous bends for the 25 miles to Lochgilphead. A mile or so up the Oban road is the turn off to Crinan. You then follow the line of the canal to the coast. the road has some single track, but is not usually too busy.

Usually pop in when heading north as one of a few detours, but I wanted to get back for the rugby, so retraced my route and home by 6.30.

Nice spot, was up there myself a few weeks ago.
Chaos is the only camouflage that incompetence needs to operate at full capacity.

I dunno where that road goes, might as well go take a look anyway there's no where else i need to be right now.

I have only been riding in Scotland for 24years and only got/discovered Crinan last year.

Lovely bit.

Got the same pic of the desolate looking big house and the piece of meadow next to it that really stands out along that bit of coast. The sun paints some pretty pictures on the land there.
The locks were surprisingly busy with traffic too.

Nice pics. (thumbs)

Spoke to one of the lock keepers there and he said it was £10 per foot the cost of getting a boat through the locks/canal. It was quite busy when we were there to, cuts out a 120 mile sail around the Head of Kintyre.
