see

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_66

and read the Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck.

An episode of Newsnight featured R66 (or rather Interstate 40) a few weeks back.

There's a 1930s revival going on there at the moment.

Homeless families are living part of the week in cheap motels along the road, then when the social security runs out living rough for the rest of the week.

Have you had a look on the ADV forum yet?
I was planning the exact same trip but then changed my mind due to the comments from the guys on the forum.
Just go to the "Trip planning" section and have a look
I dont need a MP3 player on my bike. The voices in my head sing to me all the time
