Ferry to Spain - an alternative option for those in the North

Post by AlanHolt »

Brittany Ferries have a new route from Rosslare to Bilbao, and I just priced up a return crossing at just €264 (yes, Euros) with reclining chairs both ways. A ferry from Liverpool or Holyhead to Dublin is between €50 and €90 each way.

This means if you are prepared to cross to Dublin, ride down to Rosslare and get the ferry to Bilbao, you can do it for as little as £350 return based on one rider one bike. I'm sure this will appeal to those in the north of England and Scotland.

These prices were based on leaving the UK on the 20th December and then leaving Spain on the 5th January.

Cheers Alan.

I did that route up in May on my roundabout way to the ABR Ireland bash. Can't say I was that impressed with the boat we had, its a bit basic with limited facilities when compared with others in the fleet (like Pont Avon), but if you take lots of books / downloads on a tablet (plus snacks as canteen only has limited opening times) then it does work.

There is also the Fishguard Rosslare option too for those thinking about this route and already towards the south of the UK, or those wishing to aviod Dublin in favour of a ride through mid and west Wales, with a few sailings across the Irish sea each day when I last did it.

It is def a cheaper and viable option as you say.

Its actually a quicker crossing than the slow ferries operating out of Portsmouth, and half the price, so its a no-brainer for us in the north.

I'll have a look at that as it would mean avoiding the delights of the M6 and M5 :)

Brittany have now a modern Cruise Ferry operating on the Rosslare/Bilbao crossing - the Salamanca.

That's the Irish Ferries route...but it probably won't be under £150 for a return journey on a bike... :( .

Nice boats though, and good facilities.

Well that´s good news, cheers Flinty. Almost an excuse to do it again next year... :D
