Portugal route

Post by Ksithumper »

Heading to Southern Portugal next April (Faro) two-up.
Can't do ferry to Bilbao, (neither of us get on tòo well with boats 🤮 ) so will likely go via Caen or Cherbourg to keep the crossing reasonably short.

Any route recommendations thereafter?

not really able to give you specific route advice but dependent on previous French experience you may have I would say move inland away from the French Atlantic coast before heading South.

It`s a well worn route that avoids the tolls, just head down the west coast of France, Bordeaux, then towards valladolid, Salamanca, and south Merida, Zafra etc towards Seville. Alternatively at Zafra pick up the EX101 and onto the N435 down to the east/west motorway at San Juan del Purto, personally I prefer to turn west off the N435 at Trigueros and join the N431 road at Gibraleon. Then once over the border if you want to avoid Portuguese tolls on the A22, take the N125 through Taviera and Olhao to Faro

I think the route depends on how many days you want to take riding through France?
We've done it several times and have either 'cracked on' down the west side of France to the San Sebastian area on the Atlantic coast in 2 days with 1 overnight stopover; or have taken it a bit more leisurely down the middle and east (ish) side of France to the Lourdes area north of the Pyrenees in 4 days with 3 overnight stopovers. I preferred the roads and riding on those more leisurely trips...but I'd like to do it again on the west side taking more time.

In Portugal I recommend to follow the N 2.
From Chaves to Faro.
With some detours.

The Douro Valley is fantastic.
So specific detour there.
Where N 2 crosses N 222

April is perfect timing.

I have published some pictures from my trip.
Not much text. I wrote the article in Swedish. And have never translated it.

Due to the recent rainstorms there`s been some recent washouts on the N2 in the north.
But I recommend stopping by the tourist office in Chaves and picking up an N2 "passport" and having it stamped at various locations along the route inc the Km Zero bar next to the roundabout, there`s also a portuguese language guidebook dedicated to the N2 https://www.fogecomigo.pt/product/guia- ... nacional-2 I have a 1st edition copy, and the current vrsion is No5. There`s also several Social media groups dedicated to the N2 route, inc the "Estrada Nacional 2 de moto" https://www.facebook.com/groups/143165052997412
