Bike rental options in Norway

Post by RudyFromCanada »

Hello all,
I'm new to this forum, and I apologize in advance if this topic is off or if it's something discussed over and over in the past.

I'm reaching out to the fellow riders on this forum who could advise me in the "art" of renting 3 motorcycles in Norway (preferably in South), next summer (June 28 2022- July 8 2022).
I tried and tried and tried, but it seems that either I'm not that lucky with Google, or that the options of renting 3 large Adventure size bikes, are close to none.

Bottom line is that we're 3 Canadians (owners of BMW 1250GSA) who'd like to ride for 11 days in Norway next summer, and the process of finding motorcycle rental shops, it's just like carving in stone.
In the past 2 months I kept trying to contact webpages, and the results are extremely disappointing:
* Some have extremely high price tags (approx. £ 3195.00/bike)
* Some say that they're still considering and it's a maybe - and I shall get back a month of 2 before leaving Canada....which is not helping with my planning process.
* I even reached out to somebody in Gothenburg - Sweden - advertising for Africa Twins- but they're afraid to rent to foreigners, they say: "Swedish insurance policy only allows Scandinavian citizen or holder of Swedish national Identity number to rent".

So, I said I will try here, and see, maybe somebody knows somebody, or maybe somebody went there and did it before and could recommend a 100% reliable rental place.

I would gladly offer a locally brewed beer, here in Ontario, Canada - for a great answer. Just come and ride with me in the next season.
Thanks in advance for considering to help me.

Best regards,
Rudy

I've often wondered if some web wizard could offer an international motorcycle exchange...go to county A and ride someone's bike in exchange for that person going to country B to ride someone else's bike.
I should think a few people in Norway/Sweden might want to ride in North America.

I’m afraid I’m not knowledgeable on motorcycle renting in Norway, but when I was in Oslo the prices of pretty much everything was really high, so I’d imagine that if you could rent something it would be very expensive to do so. 3195 could be the norm???

I’ve been to Norway twice, granted not on a bike and it is a very expensive country compared to the UK, I’d check what car rental prices are there & compare them with elsewhere if that proves to be expensive then at least you’ll know why bikes are?

Forgot to mention a reference value I've got from a gentleman in Norway, who had to close shop due to pandemic.
But in 2019, according to him, he was renting the big V-Stroms for 10,000 NOK a week. That's the equivalent of about 830 GBP or 980 Euros. I'd be willing to pay double for a nice GSA.
But who knows, maybe times changed.
But that much?!?....

That's a great idea. Thanks for answering.

If 3195 is the new norm, it would be something like 3.7 times the 2019 norm. At least according to a gentleman who used to run a rental shop in South Norway, before the pandemic.

That's another option. Goethenburg is only 4 hours driving distance from Oslo, so it would be ideal. I just got an alarming email from a shop owner from Sweden saying that they can't work around insurance, considering that only Swedish residents are allow to rent in Sweden. I have a hard time to believe that, but, hey, ...who am I to argue.
I guess I will just reach out to somebody else in Sweden and have my fingers crossed.
Ferrying from UK it's very time consuming. I would spend at least 2 or 3 days back and forth on the ferry - which I am not factoring in at the moment for my 2022 holiday.

Hi Rudy, I live in Norway and I think you will run into 2 problems here.
1. Cost of anything in Norway is high
2. Population of Norway is less than that of Toronto.

I only know of one place that rents here locally https://asmshop.no/pages/utleie this is a shop in Stavanger.
Their pages are informative, but I have no experience in renting :-)

I have no info on rental from Oslo, which is where I assume you will arrive, but Stavanger is a much better
place to start a trip around Norway :-)

If you want any more info, get in touch. I have no affiliation with ASM, other than they service my bike now and then.
