Kriega US5 capacity ?

Post by phil_h »

I bought a kriega us5 off ebay to try out as a tool/extras carrier... but its not anywhere near 5 litres ?
The measurements of the fabric panels on mine are 280 x 160 x 45 (which works out at just over 2 litres :( )

Did they make changes to it ?
Their ad https://kriega.com/sports/touring/us-5 says its 290(h) x 180(w) x 100(d)mm, and the pics show a number of different details, but also shows a pic on a tank looking about twice as big as mine, which is the pic that made me buy it in the first place.
The width is good, so its nicely between the knees when standing, which the us10 wouldnt be, but I would need another one to fit the spare tube in !

The old ones don't have all those labels, and I agree those photos seem to show something way bigger than 5L with reference to the US5 I have!

I rate kriega kit but that picture looks bigger than the 2 us5's I've got.

As an aside I can get a tool roll in mine with a double set of spanners from 8-13mm a selection of bigger sizes, a socket set up to 13mm, motion Pro tyre levers, c spanner, a multi tool and a couple of other bits.

Agreed. Those photos show it way bigger than my US5, which is about two years old.
Just the proportions with the extra front strap and the filled height are all wrong.
My guess is it’s a US10 but I only have the US20 so can’t compare properly.

Fill it with water, if it doesn’t hold 5 litres, complain to Kriega?

I would say the measurements are about right when laid flat as mine is 300 x 140 x 100 very full.
But the photos definitely don’t match up IMHO.
Or maybe what I think is a US5 isn’t?

Kriega seem to be good at using miss leading photo's and I wish they'd just have a little note on each photo saying the size of unit shown.
I've been looking at the OS Base system, and trying to get a feel for the size of the bags from the photo's of them on various bikes is near impossible, a note just saying the size shown would clear things up considerably.

Thanks David, that is exactly like mine, and exactly what I was thinking of on exactly the same mudguard... if I decide that I really _do_ like the bike I've just bought and not been able to ride anywhere yet :(
I note you've also not managed to get their straps though the holes in the 'loops' provided !

The website pics show different strapping - one at the end over the opening - and different fabric on the sides, so I think they quietly changed it to be a full 5 litre capacity (instead of 5 litres 'outside'), and kept the name the same.

Perhaps they mean 'pints' not litres?

Or is a US litre like a US gallon and smaller than a British one? :D

A review off their website some years ago said

Great quality: but nowhere near 5 litres
Bought this to ferry my chain around as it seems ideal - measured the size I needed and bought one. I already have an R25 rucksack, which after more than 2 years constant use looks brand new. The quality of Kriega gear is superb, and durability is second to none. However, this '5 litre' pack just cannot be that size. It actually measures 26 x 15 x 4cm - no idea who's kidding that this is 10cm deep as described. You wouldn't get 2 x 1 litre cartons of orange juice in this (I tried as an experiment), let alone a 2 metre chain (which measures 26 x 16 x 10cm coiled up).....so for size, this gets 3 stars. Really disappointed. Looks like I'll need a US 10, but that won't roll up under the seat for storage when my bike's chained up, is an expensive chain 'carry-arounder' and just not as practical.

Don't ever count on a stated US spec being true, they have a law which allows some considerable leeway in advertised size/weight/performance, I forget how much exactly but it is a significant percentage

Its a way american companies can legaly con you and many do...................capitalism at its finest
Its a trick............get an Axe
