Re: Russia
When I was travelling up to Nordkapp, I had no idea that I'd even crossed the border into Finland until I arrived at the hotel and found out it was an hour later than I thought it was: Finland is in a different time zone from Norway and Sweden.
You will need a visa to get from Finland into Russia.
I found northern Finland to be very sparsely populated and, at one time, had to travel 300 miles between fuel stops.

Re: Russia
Sat patiently next to the bike with a coffee for about an hour whilst they went through my panniers and checked the paperwork; the border guards were thorough but polite and quite relaxed. Went up to Manchester to get my Visa through an agency, who checked the paperwork before submitting it; took about a week to come through.

These people are the officially approved Visa agency with offices in London, Manchester and Edinburgh. Unfortunately you have to visit in person with your original documents.
