Insurance to allow me to ride a Mates bike in Ireland

Post by Slowrider »

While we are still in the EU I thought this would be easy, it's not.

I am visiting a friend in Dublin, he has two bikes, Irish registered. The idea is that we go on a short motorbike trip. So I need to get insurance.

- His insurance company will not add me as a named rider as he has two bikes
- My insurance company does not extend the Ride a Mates Bike cover to non UK registered bikes.
- My Insurance company can not provide a separate Temp cover policy for a non UK registered bike
- His insurance company will not give me a temp policy as I am not an Irish resident.

I have contacted two other motorbike insurance companies and there appears to be a problem with me, a UK resident, trying to cover an Irish Registered bike.

I really don't understand why I am having this problem. If I hired a bike from a hire company they would give me insurance.

Has anyone been through this and found a solution?

Could he insurance the bike you want to use again, albeit with no accrued no claims bonus, and add you as a second rider, then cancel it once your finished and recoup some of the premium?

I use a multi bike policy too.

The DO NOT add named drivers on these policies simply because they could end up covering both the insured AND a named driver simultaneously riding under the policy, at their risk.

Try www.tourinsure.de they cover situations like this. I have had friends from outside EU come in to use bikes and they but a green card. Not sure though if it works for EU residents.
