Route Advice please - Calais to Carcassonne (ish)

I did Millau to Roye virtually non stop last year in around 10hrs on the bike, and I had the experience of riding the Periferique

I find the Michelin ign maps both paper and online very good especially the green scenic roads....afterall the journey is better when riding twisty rural french roads then boring must get there today motorway...only use them in emergencies is my moto

Well I haven't used it since 2013, so maybe it's been upgraded, but I remember it as a pretty decent road, especially through Gascony.

If Scott had more time, I'd suggest leaving Perigueux on the D710, then the D47 (which we call the 'race track road') from Les Eyzies to Sarlat le Canada, and then spending time riding through Dordogne - which is more picturesque - but it would take much longer to get to the Spanish border.

If you decided to do this, Scott, you'd might as well enjoy the Dordogne valley and spend a night at JAX SHAK, before going south again the next day. It depends how much you want your trip to be an exploration of rural France, or a way to get to Spain asap but without autoroutes.

If Scott hasn't more time....then I think its worth making the more time....

I can strongly recommend this area. I love it and spend 3 weeks camped up a short distance from Les Eyzies in a little village called St Leon sur Vezere. If you haven't spent time in the Dordogne and specifically the Perigord Noir you are missing a lot. Most years now I do 3 weeks camped down there and its a piece of heaven with fantastic roads and yes the D47 is one lovely road on a moonlit night.....then head toward Montignac past the lit up Roque de St Christophe.........you can send months there and not travel the same road twice. A nice ride is the loop St Leon/Les Eyzies/Sarlat/Montignac and back to St Leon. Lots of nice distractions along the way...not to mention St Amand de Coly......and not an autoroute in sight unless you really want one.

A bit off topic I know but I have lost count of the number of trips I have gone on and never reached the originally planned destination.....never been one I didn't enjoy or meet interesting people along the way.
