We're looking at travelling up to the Western Highlands and Skye during the next week or two, for a few days, and several times next year. We'll be taking the dogs and using our day van, converted to provide basic overnight sleeps for a few nights at a time.
My question is, what's the rules and regs and do's and don'ts when it comes to rough camping? We're hoping to pull off the road and find quiet bays where we can just park up for the night, moving on the next morning and repeat.
Any advice or links to sites where I can find out would be very much appreciated.
All the best, Mike

Hi Mike
Apart from Loch Lomond area which has special wild camping regulations, wild camping is legal and the right to roam access bill in 2003 gave wild camping rights on unenclosed land. You see so many camper vans now and alot of huge tents as well so I don,t think you'll have much problem esp in the winter. I've used this internet site in the past, has all the great places like Calgary Bay etc.
Its on face book too. i usually locate the site on Google earth first to see it.

A couple of wild camping locations in above report. But as mentioned lots of places to pull in and stop for the night - as long as there are no signs saying otherwise.

Some laybys have signs saying no parking overnight, usually as there is a possibility of rock falls when in the hills.
Other that, just pull in and park up, while avoiding the dogging sites......

Its likely to be very cold sleeping overnight in a van up north and you cannot really run a paraffin heater due to the fumes.

This is worth a read to add temperance to "stop where you like".
