Re the title, a group of us are heading that way beginning of September. Is wild camping tolerated in these regions?
We will probably mostly use campsites - but would be good to know the score prior to departure.
Thanks in advance

From what I've read it's a bit of a grey area. You do know that their hunting season starts in September?

Re: Wild camping French Alps Vercors region
I am not advocating this but we have wild camped in France,Spain and Portugal for well over 15 years with no problems. We have hammocks and army bashas. We set up camp away from any dwellings and ride quietly into a wooded area with our lights off,set up with our cammoflaged gear and put a bit of vegetation around the bikes to break up the lines. We don,t tend to have a fire and make sure all rubbish and any trace we had been there has gone. We leave quite early and have rarely been challenged by anyone. You can usually get away with pleading ignorance and appologising. It is the UK where you are more likely to encounter animosity.

Just find somewhere where you can't be seen, once you've picked your spot wait 30mins before you make camp to make sure no one passes by.
Like others have said , take any litter you have with you and all will be fine, just try to make sure that the storm from hell is not arriving soon after
