Our French trip part 1

Post by sooty »

Well here goes.

Early August saw us leaving Portsmouth to head down to the village of Meyrueis which would our base for 5 days whilst we toured the Tarn Gorges and the surrounding areas. Bike loaded and prepped we left on the overnight from Portsmouth to Caen.

Arriving early the following morning, the plan was to follow a route that was in the maps published by European Motorbike Touring.co.uk. We had incorporated routes from this guide into earlier French tours and find them informative and spot on for bike touring. Anyhows, after a couple of hours following quiet D and N roads, we stopped for our first proper coffee and croissant. The roads had already put a smile on our faces, and it would only grow in the coming days despite the upcoming problem, more of which later.

Day 1 was a planned steady run dow to the village of Chenonceaux and was only about 200 miles, so a nice steady day and no rush, which was good as the roads were packed.

Manic traffic.

On route we stopped off at the little town of Vendome for lunch and soaked in the history of the place. The town was extensively damaged during WW2 and has been largely rebuilt using a method of building the newer building on to the older one. The hillside Castle gives a beautiful vista of the town and the surrounding countryside.

I used the same book as you to help plan some of my route around France this month. I have to say that I would recommend it to anyone
Over a long enough timeline, everyones survival rate drops to zero
