Black Forest, route advice please

Post by Scott_rider »

Can anyone let me know which is the best route, in terms of either North or South of Lake Konstanz, to get from Ettal in Germany to Munster in the French Vosges? We want to ride through the Black Forest as much as possible.

It's about 250 miles so we can't deviate from those two points as we will be on a schedule. Lake Konstanz is sort of the dividing factor between the choice of routes, so it's either North or South of that.

We've ridden around the southern coast road of Lake Konstanz before and whilst it's very pretty it's also a ball ache of a stop start ride with all the tourist traffic.

I think the northern route takes us into the Black Forest a bit more but I'm not 100% sure?

This google map sort of shows the options it but it's not the exact route as we won't be going on major roads.

Hope that makes sense and any advice comments will be much appreciated. Thanks.

The Northern route is pants for traffic too I am afraid, all campers and low speed limits. Last year we headed further north Ravensburg way and found some rather pleasant smooth tarmac. Also means you get to cross the B500 on some awesome wiggly bits rather than trying to avoid the quick folks and speed traps.
The secret of a long life is knowing when its time to go.

If you do go north coast of the lake then you can visit the zeppelin museum in Friedrichshafen :-)

If you've got the time in your schedule it's worth a visit and gets you a break from the god-awful traffic :)

B500 is crap, better off using the L roads surrounding it.
Try going North then cutting across to Lake Titisee.
I like the L96 & L93 through Oberwolfach but may be out of your way.

Have to be the first time I've read anyone saying the B500 is crap, possibly over rated and much talked about but crap, err....

Anyway, I've been through the BF a few times and find different roads every time I go, last years return through there was probably the best roads we've found yet, sadly I can't recall the numbers of them  but I think the L157 was one of them. If you're heading to Konstance avoid aiming for Lindau like the plague, it's a horrific road down towards there, mega busy.

This. I found the L96 to Oberwolfach by accident and it is a lovely wee road.

Lake Titisee is a good lunch spot too.

We've found most of the back roads through the Black Forest are nice, we only use the popular main roads to join up the back roads.
