Spain - route advice please

Post by Scott_rider »

Hi guys. We've been round Spain on the bikes several times but never to the Picos. Does anyone have a recommendation for a route taking about 4 days with an extra 1 day stop off/rest in a 'lively' town? We need to return to Santander to catch the boat back to the UK. We're happy to do up to 300 miles a day. Many thanks.

If it's just road you want, the Ride website is a good start, they post the routes that they have taken over the years.

If you go out of season you can also ride up to the 2 lakes further on but in season you have to park at Covadonga and catch the bus.
The road from Panes to Covadonga is also a favourite for speed traps.

Fuente De is worth a visit. Not the most exciting road but at the end of the road there is a cable car up the mountain.

Stunning views and a place I really like. Lots of places to stop off in the way for coffee etc.

You could ride the trail from Sotres to Fuente De

Don't miss the little detour to the 'bear' statue at the San Glorio pass on the N-621 Potes to Riaño road.

Image

But also don't miss Caín de Valdeón. It's a little village ate the entrance to the Cares gorge walk. If you get there in the morning just choose a restaurant and book a table, asking them if you can leave your bike gear on the chairs while you walk a few miles into the ravine.

Image

By Spanish standards the ravine is 'average' but it is a great walk and the mountains around the village ate amazing - Can is said to be one of the hottest places in Spain despite its location due to the bare rock acting like a solar oven. But in winter the sun doesn't come over the horizon for months, making it one of the coldest! :D

Enjoy!
