62 mph average?

Post by captinktm »

Just read an article about a guy that did 3000 miles in two days in the uk! He says he is the only Brit to have done this. Now back in the day I rode fast bikes and got on with it. I even rode from Berlin to Looe in Cornwall and back in a long weekend on a ZX10 and did not spare the horses. On the auto bands I rode at 150 for as long as I could and still I did n't average 62 mph. I have ridden as I am sure others have a tank full on my favorite roads and done this and better but that was before traffic and camera's. So what e think is this even possible? He had a tank range of 300 miles.

The article in Bike mag?
I really don’t understand that guy....he just rides somewhere for the hell of it so will go to Andorra for the weekend on motorways and not actually see anything.

Our trail riding average is about 21mph over 80/20 Road/trail miles.
No car I have ever had has shown more than a sub 40 average but I do very little motorway driving.

62, to me, implies a high percentage of illegal speeds or never leaving a motorway. That isn’t motorcycling IMHO.
I like to see the world around me and probably 150 to 200 Miles a day for pleasurable riding and sightseeing is just fine. I never could pump in the A to B Miles though. If nothing else, you need a civilised lunch and dinner...after a hearty breakfast.

For him it's the journey that matters, not the destination I'd guess.

Different folks, different strokes.

Can't see myself wanting to do that amount of miles in that time, but the best ride I had last year was 7 hours on the bike going out to Ullapool, up to Lochinver and back home which was about 370 miles. Never done such a long time on the bike, or that many miles with virtually no dual carriageway, but on that day it all flowed, including an excellent lunch at the Frigate Cafe in Ullapool.

Yes it was that article in the bike mag. I agree you would have to be cracking on to achieve this. In the uk for the last 10 years at least you'd racking up the points or even in jail.

I rode a 1,000 miles, home to the Cotswolds from the southern Norwegian border in 2 days. This included 2 Ferries and the euro tunnel with an overnight stop in Northern Germany. It really wasn’t that enjoyable. Thankfully only had a couple of hours of light rain during those 2 days.

I rode (many years ago) 1000 miles in 24 hours, by 750 bike with pillion and camping gear, from frejus in s france to Pontypridd, s wales. time included ferry etc .. hard going but only works out at 41.6 mph average.

by car, mostly motorways, Europe, even doing 130 in parts (before cameras) I still could only ever get 50 mph average, which allowed for stops and petrol, in that.

.. so 62 mph average, in the UK?, sounds implausible?

but there are some incredible nutters out there
