Turkmenistan transit visa – anyone done it?

I’m currently sticking pins in a map for a future trip. I'd like to take the ferry from Azerbaijan to Turkmenistan then pass through to Uzbekistan on a transit visa. I’ve had a read of the info on Caravanistan but would appreciate a bit of advice if there’s anyone on here that’s done the same? Specifically which embassy you applied to and how long in advance.
