New Zealand bike hire

Post by DavidS »

My wife and I will be touring NZ for four weeks in February and March '(18) and I am contemplating a day's bike hire so we can experience a bit of antipodean riding but without eating into the trip too much.
Prefer a Bonneville type bike as my wife won't go near a stepped pillion seat. Don"t blame her.
Assuming maybe a 150 to 200 mile day.

I have emailed Top of the South but they only have one Bonnie and I am reluctant to pre-book well in advance in case we get grot weather. This is a holiday of a lifetime, not a bout of masochism.

Anyone got recommendations of bike rental companies that will do one day and provide all the gear?
I am guessing South Island is better and we do have a bit more time there.
That said, we do have a couple of days in Auckland when we first arrive so that could be an alternative.

Thanks

Speak to Big Kuri on the KTM forum, he's back living there now so I'm sure he can give you some pointers.

Thanks Bob
I have been and have got a big list of places to go already..
You have just reminded me so I'll pester him again.

I came this route as locals don't necessarily know about hiring as they don't need to.
I'd certainly be no help round here.

South island is the way to go. Lovely roads and no traffic. Auckland is relatively large and Urban. Because there is not really a shortage of space the city is very spread out. South island a riders dream

We've got 10 days north and 18 south. Arriving Auckland from Hong Kong and leaving from Christchurch to go to Sydney and Singapore.

From what I've seen so far, only Top of the South in Nelson supply kit.

I hired from someone in Christchurch a few years ago, can't for the life of me remember their name but they were Triumph dealers, I will try and find the info but moving house tomorrow and it's all a bit of a mess.

I took the train and ferry down from Auckland to Christchurch, brilliant scenery and journey, then hired bikes and did a lap of the south island. Scotland on steroids

If you have ever considered doing a Skydive even just once in your life, you have to do it from Queenstown, small airfield on the edge of Lake wakatipu surrounded by the remarkables (mountains), do the 14000ft option to get full effect..................The people doing it are called NZONE

Apologies for off topic, but it had to be mentioned

My wife and I did a 5 week 2 Island tour last Christmas and New Year - amazing place

We hired from http://www.motorcycle-hire.co.nz/ and they have north and south island bases

Great choice of well maintained bikes

Go for it

Thanks chaps.

No no no skydive, bungee or anything extreme.
Motorcycling is extreme enough for me at my age. Not that I would have done it at 23 let alone 63.
