My recent Euro trip took me across Southern Germany.
I was about 35 minutes into day seven of my trip when I passed the WW2 Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery Dunbach, between Bad Tolz and Miesbach, Bavaria.
One of the advantages of solo travel is that you can make sudden unscheduled stops without annoying your fellow travellers.
So I executed a U turn and parked up on the little gravel car park infront of the Cemetery.
I though it was unusual to see such a cemetery deep into Southern Germany, in an area I didn't associate with any war time battles.
It's a sizeable cemetery containing 2960 burials. Mostly Airmen and predominantly RAF.
I wandered round the typically immaculately maintained graves, you are always sruck by the youthfulness of the those who gave their lives, I found it especially so with these young airmen, typically 19 - 24 years old, many decorated with The DFC and DFM.
The next of kin of the deceased had the opportunity to add a short personal inscription on the lower part of the headstone, one grave stood out for me, because unusually it included an address.
Warrant Officer Pilot T J Mycock DFC (aged 22) was a native of Prestwich, Lancashire, a town I often pass through, not far from where I grew up.
I did a little google research. The action in which he lost his life was given the name The Augsburg Raid. 17th April 1942.
At a time in the war when the Axis held the upper hand. This raid was unusually a day time raid, it was on the MAN Diesel engine works where the engines for U boats were manufactured.
I'd recommend that you take a few minutes and google this action, for me it illustrates the stunnng bravery of these incredible young men.

on my travels too i often come across CWGC sites and nearly always stop and spare a few quiet minutes wandering and wondering around the white stones of strangers far from home , just feels like that they deserve it.

These cemeteries have a book stashed somewhere with all the names of the soldiers buried there.
The ones I've seen have been in a stone plinth or in a wall with a metal door.

Our most unexpected thing was when we (wife and I) stopped for food in Germany. We had stocked up with bread and sausage etc that morning. We saw a sign to a lake, so carried our food etc along the path. Turned a corner and got met with the sight of a couple of dozen Germans sunbathing totally stark bollock naked draped all round the place. Being Germans it was as though someone had dropped huge piles of wobbly pink blancmange across the scenery. After a quick discussion we decided to stay and eat.
So there was us in our bike gear and them in their altogethers.
It would have made a superb photo, but I though that producing a camera might get us lynched.

Re: Unexpected stuff you come across whilst riding your bike......
Not particularly epic, but when riding through Colorado last month, we came across two old, abandoned log cabins in the middle of nowhere. They looked like they were built a long, long time ago and we ventured inside to see what they were like. Around the back I found a crudely made wooden cross stuck into the ground with a bunch of out-of-place flowers growing at its base - and obvious grave.
I could have stayed there all day imagining what it would have been like to live here back all those years back, and also wondering who actually lived here, and who was buried in the back garden.

I'm sure I've seen these a few years ago. Not as close but I think as I passed from a motorway. I'd guess it was in Hungary but I'm probably wrong.
Where is it?
