In the very unlikely event that you are stopped by a Gendarme the first thing you will be asked for is 'vos papiers s'il vous plait'. If it's just a random check if you present your papers you'll be on your way in seconds. If you didn't have your light on or weren't wearing gloves then if you have your docs then he'll just tick you off and send you on your way. If you can't produce your docs. he'll be pissed off and probably fine you for the offence - generally 90 euros.

Your choice really, but complying with a couple of simple rules seems like the stress free option to me.

I accept that the chances of being pulled over are very slim these days but I've been stopped more than 50 times over the past 25 years.
