I had a new card this year, prepay MasterCard, and it worked every time I used it for fuel, no refusals at all. The card was got for the sole purpose of using automated fuel pumps.

This is the first time this has been the case, in previous years I needed three cards as some would not work on some pumps.

I also came across some stations with a cash option, you put the cash [you determine the amount] in a machine and it prints out a ticket which is then read by the scanner on the automated pumps.

I have used fairfx for a number of years, you preload with euros at the day’s rate, I tend to load it over the winter whoever the rate is good, saves cash for the summer......so at the moment I’ll load it whenever I can get over 1.13 euros per £. ( a few years ago it was over 1.30). Oh well

I have also used Revolut. You load this card with £s and they do the transaction at a very good exchange rate, with no fees, the advantage with Revolut is that they send you an email for each transaction, and you can Lock the card using the App, which prevents anyone from skimming the card. I have used this card in EuropeUS and south east Asia, works for me.

I would take both cards and a normal U.K. credit/ debit card, don’t keep them all in the same place.
