Watching your thread & the suggestions with interest as I've got a friends wedding in Ayr on the 10th June & booked the following week to explore some of the West coast.

Looking at your map your going thru Glenshee ski resort , superb road , some of the east coast is the best kept secret because everyone believes it's got to be Skye and applecross , go up there loads doing a big round , over a long weekend, fortunate as I live in Durham, the north east coast of England has a few gems as has the east coast of Scotland

Agreed that the west is more spectacular, which is great as the convoys of tourists clog up the A82 and gems like the A839 are almost deserted

Do you mean the Falkirk Wheel? If it is, then nearby is Rough Castle on the Antonine Wall and also there's the Kelpies.

The Bikers Cove, South Queensferry, just under the rail bridge do a good bacon roll if you're taking a photo stop.

North Berwick , not to be confused with Berwick is a nice town , any of the border roads are good fun , Coldstream / Kelso Hawick st Mary's loch , enjoy your trip watch out for gravel on the glenshee road . Think about from glenshee , Inverness then up toward Lairg , loch loyal toward Armadale ,then turn left toward Durness Ullapool , Skye midgies , check out the Stein inn , sligachan pub , and camp site at Glen brittle t Speed camera s on east side and coppers hiding on the west normally around rannoch moor / green welly , an interesting stop on way back is the old pub near ardluie ( drovers inn , inverannon ) and Selkirk wheel , if you go to Ayr the road back toward England is a haunt of traffic police

We havent booked any campsites in Skye and Ayr, your advise it is great.
We will spend two days in Durham and around to visit the castle and up North-East other castle, on the coast. I know we can wild camp but the only reason for opting for campsites is to have a shower by the end of the day and a place to wash some clothes if we need to as the panniers have limited space.

The map doesn't show the Glenshee road but the A90 dual carriageway.If Dunnotar Castle is a must for your trip take the coast road instead from Dundee.After Arbroath that's a fun road with fast sweepers. (thumbs)

Hopefully you will not be in to much of a rush to leave Scotland so... Dumfries & Galloway has many gems >
From Ayr, the choice road is A713 south east to Dalmellington, turn right just before the town for the road to Straiton. Hang a left at Straiton and go down the Glentrool Forest Park Road. Exit this onto the A714 to Newton Stewart.
Take a left over the bridge at the 1st junction as you enter Newton Stewart and follow the road out and round onto the A712 for Clatteringshaws Loch (and The Raiders Road if you fancy a wee ride on the dirt) on to New Galloway.
Head a short distance to St Johns Town Of Dalry and head up the hill on the A702 to Moniaive and onto Thornhill.
Turn left at the junction and a little way up the road take a right turn at Carronbridge to re-join the A702 all the way to Elvanfoot over the Dalveen Pass (further north and almost running parallel is the Wanlochhead road. Another stunner.)
Finally you may make your escape over the border via as much of the B7076 as you can which runs south parallel to the M74 motorway.
Hope some of this may be useful to you. Empty, enjoyable roads with some cracking views and villages.
