Corrugated roads!!!!!!

Post by dibbs »

I've been watching a few vids of Marocco lately and there are these corrugated roads everywhere, are these man made like that? As they seem really hard to ride over, or is this just a natural phenomena? It appears that other parts of the world also have this type of road too and a lot of bike forums say riding over it is a very nasty experience. What's it all about???

Corrugated roads!!!!!!

Post by AustinW »

Anywhere I have been with unsealed road surfaces used by many vehicles gets washboarded eventually, and if there's a lot of trucks then it happens very quickly. Most places employ guys with "graders" to level it off from time to time, usually on rota in their patch. Although a freshly graded area is not that pleasant either as although the surface is smooth it's not compacted much. A lot like riding in sand and the bike tends to have a mind of its own.

Riding Technique is either go fast enough to skim over the tops, slow enough that you can cope with it, or carefully pick your lines to avoid the worst of it.

I think the cause is something to do with harmonised suspension pounding the surface.

The joys of Alaskan roads.
A bit annoying on a bike after a while I suspect - awful in a 30ft motorhome
