I've booked it, its been an itch I've wanted to scratch for a few years so last night I sorted the flights to Athens and I've sorted a little Suzuki 250 to rent while I tour as many of the following as I can in a week:
Athens
Delphi
Olympia
Messini
Apollo
Nestor
Vathia
Sparta
Kardamyli
Nafplion
Aghios
Nikolaos
Epidaurus
Mykine
Acrocorinth
Sounio

And hopefully swim in all the nearby lakes and eat the awesome food and drink the wine.

Any recommendations of places to stay, sites that aren't worth visiting or anything else useful would be great.

Check out the carvings at Olympia

The temple to Apollo at Bassae is in a wonderful location in the middle of nowhere, great road from Olympia.

Well at least I'll be [strike] treading in the auspicious footsteps of one of my heroes[/strike] able to smooth over some of the diplomatic carnage he undoubtedly left behind.

A grand plan sir! Get up early and do the sites before the crowds gather and heat rises especially stuff like the Parthenon which is a bit of a walk. I like Greece but Athens meh, big smelly city. B)
