Trip to Vienna, most pleasant route...

Post by gooseneck » Thu Jan 19, 2017 5:35 am

My partner and I are riding to Vienna, taking the channel tunnel as she does not do water..
I'm looking for a route that is both fairly direct, yet incorporates pleasant and scenic roads.
She will be on her gs650 sertao, me on my strom.
any help on way points, roads to avoid/ use, good quiet hotels etc with secure parking.
Anything really that I will need to make for smooth run, as she will be taking part in the Vienna marathon, so I want to make it a stress free trip.
If I sound naive...I probably am, the last time I traveled across Europe was on an xt 550 back in the 1980's, and a couple of times before that on a 750 sohc honda!
So any tips, don't do's,must do's, are welcome....
Many thanks in advance to those who help out here...
:)

Try and cross into Austria via Passau, past Linz then on to Vienna. On the way back you could go from Vienna via Salzburg to Germany. A bit longer but some nice roads round there and Salzburg is always worth a stop. As for hotels, it's been a while since I was in Linz, i used to live there. Well untill I was 15...

You'll notice some big changes since the 80's then. European touring with a smart phone and satnav is now a relatively stress free doddle. I've done that route a couple of times over recent years, but depends on how long you want to take, what your daily mileage is and whether you intend using motorways. The 2 routes I use are basically heading east across northern France (the boring bit) keeping off the motorways. One heading towards the Black Forest and Lake Constance and the other to Basel and Switzerland. The Swiss route I then head for Vaduz, Innsbruck, Saltzberg, Linz etc, but don't forget to pick up your Vignette before entering Austria. (Big fines if you don't) For the German route, I picked up the Deutsche Alpenstrasse from Lindau at the eastern end of Lake Constance and followed it east, then onto Salzburg via Berchtesgaden. I once did it via Munich, but never again. As for accommodation, I just look and where I want to be the next night, search booking.com for a place with parking and make an on line reservation. Easy. If like me, no motorways and 200-300 scenic miles a day, then allow 4 to 5 days each way to Vienna.

I am going to try and avoid motorways, I have 4 days for get there, so might need to blast out one day on the motorway to pack some miles in, but if I can do it the scenic way it would be a bog preference for both of us.
thanks for the help, it's giving me thinking material.

I'm going to have to get my map out and plot these sugestions, I really apreciate them, it's going to help me clarify a route, and work out the time to ride it.

Here's the details of the route and hotels for a trip I did last year to Slovenia, where I headed south from Berchtesgaden you could head east to Vienna.
It won't attach, if you're interested PM me and I'll e-mail it to you.
