You don't need to update the photo when renewing so you only need to fill out sections 1,2,3 & 9 for an adult passport renewal See guidance notes https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/s ... ssport.pdf
Remember to write the form in BLACK ink & add the application form barcode number on the back of the cheque, re-read the form before you fill it out to ensure you don't make mistakes

You'll find that if your passport has run out, it's not a problem to re enter the UK from France. It happens all the time! Border Force just have to do a quick check on you, them give you a little telling off before they let you travel

Guess I've just been lucky then.
Last year I went to Germany,Austria,Hungary,Romania,Slovenia & Italy.
Never once showed my passport, Bike paperwork yea dozens of times.
Can't comment on hotels, I never use them.
I still carry my passport though, just incase...
