Iceland next week!

Well guys, back on the forum after another very long absence and hoping for some input for my trip starting next week.

Finding myself with a fair bit of time on my hands I've decided on a short notice trip to Iceland, taking the ferry from Denmark. Looks like the highland roads are still closed from winter so I may be more or less confined to the ring road but if so I'll still be happy. I have 2 weeks in Iceland and then a couple of days in the Faroes on the way back (thumbs)

Hoping for some feedback from those who have gone before ... any must sees / routes / advice / suggestions?

I'll be camping for the full trip. The bike (KTM Adventure 990) is in decent shape for the trip (apart from a couple of Gun Gum sealed holes in the pipes!) and I'll be putting a set of new Heidenau K60s on before setting off. Also carrying a 3.8l Rotopax in case I do get into wilder parts.

Interested to hear about the tyre choice .... used them before?

Currently putting them on XT660R for Stella trip

Heard and read that they are similar to TKC80 but last longer

Last set was Karoo 3 - good road and wet tyre, decent off-road but limited grip especially the front in anything wet

Hi Monster, Re the tyres ... I have used them before and if I'm honest I had a bit of mixed feelings. The back could get a little bit flighty on wet corners once it squared off but on the other hand they were very durable and they offered me the right mix of road and general off-road (for the light-off road I ever do).

For a general tour of Iceland with no serious real off-road intentions but with better traction than a pure road tyre for gravel sections and some moderate F roads (if open) I think they're a good compromise.

Definitely longer life than a TKC80 which is why I'm happy to fit them at home and have them on for the road miles up to Denmark.

Not that it should be part of any serious consideration but they do also look fantastic on the KTM ;)

I've used them, on an XT660R to do the Elefantentreffen.

- Hard to put on and take off, they didn't slip over the rim (and I'd kept them in my house overnight to warm them).
- Not so bad, most the time but when it was cold and wet they felt like they slipped a lot on the Motorway.
- When they wore down the bike didn't feel that well connected.

Better than the Swedish Army Specials, but not sure they give you enough extra off-road grip to justify using them instead of Tourances to be honest.

Mind you... I had K60s on a Kawasaki 220 two stroke dirt bike once and did quite a bit of stuff that surprised me...
