Scotland Help / Tips

Post by ChopsMcgee »

Hi guys,

I am putting together a trip "oop north" to Scotland (from Manchester) roughly around June for 3 (ish) days (depending on how far we go with the planning).

I am after some help!

this will be my first "big trip" with the bike (triumph tiger xc) and I need some hints on where to go!

At the moment I have in mind;

Hadrians wall (we are passing it so why not stop and take a photo!)
Fort William
Applecross (recomendation from a colleague, looks incredible!)

At the moment I have it in mind to try and reach John o Groats. I have travelled the east coast of scotland a little with work (Aberdeen / Ellon) and find the east coast a bit bland, so I am thinking a west coast trip would be the best bet.

I am mostlt after tips / land marks / previous experience etc etc!

Thanks in advance.

PS - the middle bit ain't too shabby either, nor are the Grampian hills. Try to use the A93 in part of your trip - you'll not regret it (thumbs)

Stay out on the west side , Fort William is not a pretty town,
Camping or hotel /b/b ing ? Applecross ,up the high road is a must do ( if there is no low cloud) if the clouds covering the top DONT TRY IT. The A82 up through Glencoe is good in any weather

West coast is superb, but you'll be setting yourself a task if you plan on doing john o groats with just 3 days. Also make sure you cover up when you stop and cover yourself in midge repellent because the little blighters will eat you alive if you don't, even the locals cover up.

For the first bit.
Head north, a1 or through the dales, to darlington then pick up the glorious a68 to corbridge. Head a bit more a68 north and pick the b6318 that runs beside hadrian wall all the way to greenhead. Glorious views, bugger all traffic.
You can avoid much of the m74 north by using the old road, b7076.
Once north of glasgow it's a82 time.
Enjoy :-)

Just reread the first bit. You'll want more than 3 days, Scotland is BIG!
