Killarney, suggestions?

Post by steve_h80 »

Well we're in Killarney for a few days.
What do you recommend? Other than the Healy Pass of course.

Get to the coast and pick up the Wild Atlantic way, you won't go too far wrong. Or head for Glengarriff / Ballylicky and priests leap. Or head the other way and Kilorglin and on to Portmagee and Valencia Island. So many choices in that part of the Island.

Dingle Peninsula clockwise, take in Slea Head Drive. Conor Pass is best taken this way. It makes a full loop from Killarney.

At Inch Beach there is a place to stop for eats/coffee. Part of Ryan's Daughter was filmed there.

Eating in Dingle itself can be erratic to be honest and personally I just like to get out the other side. Nice aquarium there though.

Ryan's Daughter: Showing all 7 filming locations

Cliffs of Moher, County Clare, Ireland (Rosy loses her parasol, opening scene)

Inch Strand, Dingle, County Kerry, Ireland (beach)

Coumeenoole Strand, Dunquin, County Kerry, Ireland (beach)

Noordhoek Beach, Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa

Bridges of Ross, County Clare, Ireland (Storm scenes)

Dingle Peninsula, County Kerry, Ireland

Maoilinn na Ceathrun, Carhoo, Dunquin, County Kerry, Ireland.

Another day...Killarney and Ring of Kerry, again a loop clockwise, Killarney to Molls Gap and Kenmare...Sneem but take the road down to Ballinskelligs, across the top down to Finan's Bay and go to Valentia.

Had a look at www.met.ie and looks like dry weather all the way!!

Another day.......when you get to Kenmare head onto the Beara Peninsula and head toward Lauragh and take the Healy Pass over to Glengarriffe as part of a longer run. You could do this part as a diversion off the Ring of Kerry and its worth it if time is not on your side.

well, if your going to Dingle theres the'' South Pole Inn'' its a pub somewhere near dingle

Tom Crean was an Arctic Explorer and when he returned to Kerry he opened that pub, the South Pole Inn

he was one of the crew on the famous Endurance Expedition with Ernest Shackleton.. When their ship got caught in the ice and sank, he was one of the six men to make that famous ocean crossing from Elephant island to South Georgia in a little lifeboat to get help,, then Tom Crean and Shackleton and Worsley had to cross the dangerous mountains and glaciers of South Georgia to get to the whaling station, its an amazing story of survival, so it is

the Crean glacier in South Georgia is named after him

Tom Crean was also with Scott on Scotts fatal Expedition to the south pole,

he is buried in a graveyard not far from the pub

anyway, its a bit of history,
