Motorways - they're not all bad

Post by Alun »

Riding on British motorways holds about as much appeal as having a red hot poker stuck in the eye. But, there are some good ‘ens out there. For example the 86kms stretch of the A43 from Alton in France to Bardonecchia in Italy passes through a spectacular region of the Alps and its virtually unused. Which all means you can cruise and take in the scenery without the hassle of the 4 wheel brigade.

There is a sting in the tail though, the new 13kms tunnel from Modane to Bardonecchia costs an eye watering 23 Euro each way.

Any other ‘good motorways’ out there? Or what about some nightmare sections?

I ride 50 miles up the M1 to work and back and actually I quite enjoy it.

Its usually at around 6 in the morning, the sun is just coming up in the sky, there are some lovely views, fields, river, lakes and bar a few lorries the road is empty.

My partner decided to get up early with me the other day and just came for a ride with me to work (he is on holiday) and said what a lovely ride it is too.

There are some little country roads and corners and views for the final bit of the ride.

Lolo, I've thought long and hard about this and you are the first, without doubt.

I can say with hand on heart I've never met a single person who's had a good word to say about the M1. And for that reason, I'm going to send you an Adventure Bike Rider sticker free of charge as soon as we get them. I want that sticker to share your motorway joy.

And whilst I'm at it I'll send LWR one for not living near a motorway.

As a means of getting places they're great especially out of the UK. Did 700 miles in a day on my Fireblade to get to the Alps in May. Then had 3 days playing in the mountains including going over high passes in almost zero visability with 10 feet of snow either side of the road. Quick blast up the Route Napoleon then another 550 mile run home. Great fun made possible by fast motorway travel there and back. Fantastic holiday in very limited time so wife and work happy as well.

Paul, what's the biggest pain in the ass?
700 motorway miles on a Fireblade or
280 miles off road on a KTM 450
