What a fantastic country! Lovely people, cheap, safe, friendly, culture, history... We're cycling through it right now http://bicyclingbetty.blogspot.com/?m=1 but if you'd prefer an engine I don't think you could go far wrong with these guys... http://www.straydogasia.com/#upcoming_tours

Thanks for the links. The Stray Dogs website is good......got me dreaming!
Just checked up on Stray Dog's claim that a XR250r had completed the Dakar. I had my doubts, but in 2011 a guy finished a few minutes behind Simon Pavey on a pretty much standard XR250r!

The other option is to rent a scooter for less than $10/day or an XR250 for about $25 and head off yourself. With half a brain and a decent map you can't really go wrong. Nice clean aircon guest houses are $10-25 and a dinner is about $2-3 and pretty tasty. Beer is 50p a can

What if you haven`t even got half a brain  thinking of doing voluntary work out there but might sneak in a bike ride (thumbs)Willandkate wrote:The other option is to rent a scooter for less than $10/day or an XR250 for about $25 and head off yourself. My son is Cambodia now. He bought a Honda 100 in North Vietnam for $200, rode it all the away down to South Vietnam then into Cambodia (took 2 months) where he sold it for $150 just yesterday. He said something on the bike fell off or broke nearly everyday but he ALWAYS got help very quickly like someone stopping getting their tools out and fixing it for him, or bike thrown in the back of a van and taken to the local repair shop where things were welded, bodged, replaced or whatever for just a couple of dollars. A full service incl oils and filters, and a plug was something stupid like $5 and he stood over them to make sure they did it all. There's 3 of them travelling together on a budget of something like £10 a day and they seem to be doing OK.
I think we will be out there next winter. :woohoo:

Was he able to cross from Vietnam into Cambodia with the bike? Any idea if he could also have entered Laos or Thailand with it? It would make for a good trip if you could a buy a bike in one country and ride it throughout the region.

gbags wrote:Yes he took the bike across the Vietnam/Cambodia border as he had all the right papers for it. He said they crossed in just a few minutes but I don't know which crossing they used. He has sold it in Cambodia as he understands he couldn't take it to Laos or Thailand, both of which are on their itinerary - to the extent they have one. Horizons Unlimited is the place to ask as someone there will know what's possible.AustinW wrote:My son is Cambodia now.
