Zeebrugge > Cochem splitting the journey

Looking to my jolly next July and I'd initially pencilled in Liege as a stop off point for the 1st night on the way from Zeebrugge to Cochem, but a mate of mine say it's a dump and not worth visiting. (Yes I know you can get to Cochem in a day but this is a holiday not a race and I'm not using motorways.)
So - what other town is recommended around 4 hours ride away from Zeebrugge on the way to Cochem?
Or should we just blast down the E40 & E42 to Cochem?

How about heading as quickly as you can for the Belgian Ardennes, La Roche En Ardenne for example, and then slowing the pace down on day two. You could go Bastogne, Ettelbruck, Echternach, Trier and up the Mosel Valley to Cochem.

Thanks, the plan is down the Mosel Valley > Castle Road and Romantic Route. The journey is planned but the stopping off points aren't set in stone.

+1 for the Belgium Ardennes.
We camped at Dinant which was a fabulous place for our first night on the way to Mosel Bikes (top place to stay (thumbs) )

Vianden in Luxembourg Ardennes is well worth a look around as is the WW2 Museum in Bastogne

Hmmm Vianden > Nurburgring and then onto Cochem ......
Then again Spa Francorchamps then onto Nurburgring etc...............

If you're looking for an alternative to Liege, but want to maintain your basic route, then go to Monschau instead - don't miss it.

The Ardennes are great but I can't suggest a camp site because we usually go there for race weekends and stop on temporary sites where they're racing.

Chimay is a nice little town with plenty of good restaurants (and bars) and there must be a camp site there but you'd have to google for info. As a place to visit I'd knock Spa off the list unless you're going there when there's racing on because I thought it was slightly less than marginal when it came to places worth visiting compared against others in the region.

I'm slightly confused by this, as I'd have thought Cochem is about 4 hours ride anyway from the ferry ?? It was when we went a few years ago.
