French travel Requirements ?

Post by howlingmoon »

Hi All
I know this has been asked before, but I understand that requirements for motorcycle travel in France changed last year but ive been unable to find out exactly what is now required.

So far ive been told- Reflective stickers on crash helmet, spare light bulbs, hi - vis vest or jacket, GB sticker, breathalyzer kit, head light deflectors, tool kit.

Seems total overkill but is this correct ?

Ha Ha. Hi Phil ,Hows it hanging ?.
Glad to here your on the mend after your illness...Ive been keeping up with your antics, they always make for amusing reading,
Good on ya Mate !. (thumbs)

The info on the Net regarding whats required is so confusing, every place I look is different in some way. No vest, ive seen, but thought Booze detector was a compulsory.
No doubt ill wing it somehow but it would be good to know for sure.

no doubt you will get different answers....

as far as I know, from various sites and the AA, and what I take when I go...

No Breathalyser needed
No beam adjusters....(bike headlights are not that directional)
Hi Viz needn't be worn but recommended in case of accident,
Helmet reflective stickers,,,,been required for a few years, but apparently being more strict about it now
GB sticker still required even with euro plate

Spare bulbs and 1st aid kit, legal requirement in a few EU countries

ive never been stopped in over 7 years, but 10 mins and £25 in Halfords gets the whole lot, so why not?? its just not worth the hassle of arguing in a foreign language, and maybe having things swing in your favour if stopped for something else.... once you have them they'll last a few years anyway, and a 1st aid kit and spare bulbs are not a bad idea anyway.

don't forget all your original documents and EHIC card

helmet stickers are £2.50 (google)

This subject has been covered so many times and i don't mind answer any Qs as the AA and other groups quite often get it wrong !!

No they knocked the breathalizer on the head a month or 6 back !! there is no law regarding the vest , but they are that small and very handy on the auto-routes !!

Holiday season always brings the Flick out in numbers and tourist are easy prey ,best thing to do is keep it clean and enjoy it.

Any town you enter with a sign like this meens 50 KPH

Untill this sort then it's back to Nat limit or whats signed
Image

This is where you most likely get nabbed !!! €90 fixed fine !!!

Where you heading ? if you get down this far , callin for a brew

only time ive ever been stopped was by customs (Douane/Zoll) 2 bike cops escorted me to a layby where the van was, they looked through my bags, then wanted to talk about Bobby Robson (Newcastle Manager at the time) for half an hour  and I know jack shit about football

I go to France about 6 times per year on the bike and don't do anything different to when I'm riding in the UK apart from carry a photocopy of my bike logbook or whatever it's called now.

Life's too short to worry about stupid technicalities and foreign riders don't give a shit when they visit here.

Now I'm confused..........

"(1) GB Stickers are compulsory within the EU unless your UK registration plates display the GB Euro-symbol (Europlates) which became a legal option from 21 March 2001. The Euro plate must comply with the new British Standard (BS AU 145d). The Euro plate is only legally recognised in the EU; it is still a requirement to display a GB sticker when travelling outside the EU."

http://www.direct.gov.uk/prod_consum_dg ... 067666.pdf

See
"8 The Euro symbol on a number plate
You may, if you wish, display the Euro symbol and GB
national identifier on the number plate. This will get rid of
the need for a separate GB sticker when travelling within
the EU.
The symbol must meet the EC Council Regulation
2411/98 which states that:
n the height must be a minimum of 98mm;
n the width must be a minimum of 40mm (maximum
of 50mm);
n the background must be of retro-reflecting blue
with 12 retro-reflecting yellow stars at the top; and
n the distinguishing sign of the Member State (GB)
in retro-reflecting white or yellow."

Has the law changed about this as I can't find any reference to it and I've been through France a lot ......... never had a GB sticker since the EU regs came out (98)

you may well be right, cant say i'm 100% sure.....but last time I looked on AA site, it said GB sticker as well as plate, you see this on many cars too, EU plate and GB sticker.....so I use one, its quite common in inter EU cars too, cars with an NL or D or CZ plate will still have a country sticker...so whats the story there then,

as I said.....there will be many answers, I said what I do/thought to be right
