Hi Coddy
Santander (along with Bilbao etc) is on/near the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route, there are hundreds of hostels along that route....my Dad does the Camino every year on foot, and has never booked a hostel and always easily found somewhere every night.
The road signs and route (as well as on the pavements) are marked with the scallop shell symbol (the sign of St. James).
You'll be grand!!

Should have said.....there are loads of links that will help. Also there is no one single route...there are many of them, all the small towns / villages usually have hostels etc to cater for the pilgrims.

Potes is a nice place in the Picos and has some great roads around it.
Also, consider riding the AS-340 from Nueva to Cangas de Onis ( a lovely town with lots to see and do) it's a very small and twisty road, but worth it (thumbs)

Me and the wife stayed at this place for 4 nights, recuperating after a Moroccan trip.
Very nice. Friendly owners. Beautiful rooms. Amazing setting on clifftop. Restaurant a bit pricey so we ate elsewhere.

Plenty of things to see and do/ places to eat and drink (Cider houses) in nearby Aviles

I would either head east and take in the Pyrenees or if you've already been there then head south and into northern Portugal.
Santander
Potes
Pueblo de Sanabria
Braganca
Aveiro
Coimbra
Guarda
Then over the border into Spain and back up to Santander.
Nick.

Once getting to Guarda, you're in the slope of the highest mountain and one of the most beautiful places in Portugal - Serra da Estrela. It's worth to stay around for a few days and explore the characteristic small villages, beautiful roads, amazing food and wine, and if you're doing off-road, the large immensity of trails and fire lanes all over the mountain.Nickw909 wrote:I would either head east and take in the Pyrenees or if you've already been there then head south and into northern Portugal.

For a good number of years I have wanted to visit here but yet to get around to it, I hear the area is nice with a sad history.
