Singapore is not that big so everything is fairly easy access from the airport. Taxis are not that expensive. I haven't stayed in a budget hotel there, but they do exist. Have a look on tripadvisor before booking. Chinatown is good to visit. Fab foods and great markets. The Long Bar at Raffles is iconic but expensive. And if you want a fantastic night time view get up to Level 71 New Asia Bar in the Swissotel (you can go just for the view). The lift takes about 10 secs to get there!

If you like meat try Carnivore, a bit pricey but worth it. Or the cheaper option is the street hawkers that they took off the streets, there's 3 or 4 sellers around a communal seating area, all off the street.

+1 Chinatown, there's a house there preserved as it would have been in the 18th C that's worth a look. The zoo is good, they have meerkats :)

There are plenty of places to stay in Singers but I will ask a mate of mine who works there for a few recommendations

The botanical gardens, China town. The last time I went there I just jumped on a rickshaw and asked the guy to show me around we had breakfast at 3am in one of the temples (jet lag is a wonderful thing) we ended up in taking turns in riding when he got knackered as you do, saw some really interesting places
